Need some Robotech live action? Well, with all the 80s franchises being remade into feature films in the past few years, it looks like we’re finally going to get a chance to see one of our favorite mecha franchises on the big screen. This film has been in production for a while now, and nothing has materialized as far as footage or a trailer, but we do know that its being worked on. In this post, we’re going to go over the brief history of this film and hopefully get you up to speed on it. So let’s start at the beginning:
2007 - The Announcement
On 9/7/07, the website TheHollywoodReporter.com announced that Warner Brothers Studios had purchased the film rights for the franchise and they would be producing a Robotech live action movie with an as-yet-unknown release date.
They said that Tobey Maguire, of Spiderman fame, is going to be the films producer through his production company Maguire Entertainment. It was also stated that he would likely be playing the main character in the film.
In an interview later that year, a representative for Harmony Gold, the parent company that produced Robotech back in the 80s, named Kevin McKeever said that Warner Brothers had approached the company about the project and promised that they would have a “say” in the creative direction of the film.
2008 – Writer Announced And More Producers Confirmed
In June of 2008 it was reported that Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, had been hired as the film’s writer. It was also reported that Akiva Goldsman and Charles Roven would be adding themselves to the producers list along with Tobey Maguire.
Later that year, during the Robotech Panel that went on at the Anime Expo in 2008, it was confirmed that Kasdan would indeed be writing the script for the movie. In addition to that Tommy Yune, an artist for the original series, revealed that the movie was going to be a re-imagining of the first Robotech universe. He revealed that the mecha and character designs would be updated for modern audiences, but they would still be familiar to fans of the series. He also stated that the story would take place in a near future setting, as opposed to the year 2009 setting that the original series took place in.
In November of 2008 the set writers were announced as Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Both of these have extensive experience with action films and television series. Their resume includes Smallville, Spider-Man 2, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
At the end of 2008 Charles Roven announced that he would no longer be involved with the films production.
2009 – Writer Change
On June 23, 2009, TheMania.com reported that Tom Rob Smith has taken over as lead writer for the film. His experience comes from writing for British television soap opera and as a crime novelist, having produced the exclaimed title Child 44.
2012 – Possible Director
In January 2012, it was announced that Nic Mathieu, a popular television commercial director would be directing the film.
2013 - Where We Stand Now
These past few years have seen the major players assembling to make the film. Next we can expect there to be some type of cast announced as the film enters pre-production. Hopefully we’ll see a trailer before the end of this year, and possibly a release date for summer 2014. This is of course a guesstimate on my part, but I’m hoping for the best because I know this movie is going to be awesome!
